HOW TO YBK: LESSON PLAN
Storytelling for sports
Fall sports are winding down, and we’re on to the next season, but before your reporters cover that state championship game, go over some helpful hints for writing about sports.
If you have great ideas and lesson plans to share with your yearbook friends — and we know you do — email them to ybk@herffjones.com. We’d love to hear from you!
CHECK OUT THESE THREE THINGS, TOO
Ready for winter? Sports are moving inside and the difficulty of getting good photos will increase. Make sure your photographers practice shooting in the gym before covering a game. Print these photography cards and make your own versions to match the unique shooting conditions in your school.
Want to get better at sports coverage? Here are three yearbooks that set the bar high. As you’re looking over these examples with your students, talk about how these staffs made use of this week’s tips.
It's never too early to think about your reference sections. With fall sports over, make sure you have complete scoreboards and get those team pics identified. While you're setting styles for captioning group pictures, club photos can be handled too. Need some inspiration for your reference section? Check in the 2018 Showcase.

PRO TIP: Never reveal the true plant deadline to your students. Set up mini deadlines, and leave yourself time to review pages before submitting.
