HOW TO YBK
An index is not built in a day
 
If you haven’t started working on your index pages yet, it’s time to put it on your calendar. The index is one of those pesky tasks that sneaks up on everyone during the final deadline days. Better to get it sketched out now. There is some great guidance on page 16 of the People and Index section of the curriculum.
 
An accurate index is the ultimate service to your readers, so any additional mini listings, like all of the clubs or teams and page numbers, help students find themselves. Index pages are a great way to cover every student, so consider including those kids who missed picture day or who started attending your school later in the year.
 
CHECK OUT THESE THREE THINGS, TOO:
 
1. Add more coverage: Once you get your index built, even if it’s just for practice, lay it out onto the pages you’ve reserved — then plan coverage around the gaps. Look for letters that break awkwardly and fill in with a mod or a mugshot and quote package. Experiment with color and have fun. Need inspo? Check out our online showcase reference section.
2. Helpful hint: Not sure how to sort the names in your index? Try the middle name trick.

Overwhelmed yet? We bet you are. There are some little/big jobs in yearbook that you can probably get your colleagues to help you with. Trust us, it’s worth it to get a little bit of backup.
Ask homeroom teachers to check names in the people section. Recruit a few English teachers to proofread a spread or two. Buy them a coffee and delegate. Chances are, your “Smarty Smarterson” students have smart parents too. If you’re drowning, it’s worth asking. Parents can proofread, too!
