COVID-19: We need some strategy here

Before we say another thing, please know that your Herff Jones family is here to help. We know your already-stressful deadline season is likely to get kicked up a notch, and we’d like to offer solutions and make the deadline-to-delivery process an easy one. Throughout all of our facilities and teams, we are working hard to stay healthy and keep all of the yearbooks printing as normal, but we are strategizing, just as you are. From your sales rep to customer service and beyond, we’re here to help.

HERE ARE SOME HELPFUL HINTS:

THINGS TO CONSIDER TODAY:

• Plan to connect: If you don’t already have a way to connect with your staff, consider a Google Hangout or similar plan. If possible, test it in advance of your potential separation to make sure it works for your staff.

• Collect enough content to finish your book: It seems obvious, but if you have empty pages here and there, now might be the time to find a great photo and print it big. Write up a nice caption and finish those pages.

• Keep the photos coming: If you lack photos, check out cameras to your most trustworthy staffers, make sure phone photographers know how to capture maximum-size photos, and brainstorm. In most parts of the U.S., spring flowers will be blooming soon.

• Be realistic about coverage: We’re talking about spring sports. In some parts of the country, they’re already being cancelled or at least severely delayed. Assume you have no games. What can go on those pages? Is there a practice you can take photos of today?

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT TOMORROW:

• World Yearbook and Our World: Although the deadline has passed, you may be able to order these news supplements on a case-by-case basis. (Thank you, KC!) That’s ready-made content covering important news. Get in touch with your rep if you’d like to add this. Note: The early coronavirus story is included, but this supplement has already gone to press.

• Consider a tip-in: A special-paper tip-in takes up more space and adds width to your book. What if you included a tip-in of photography or student poetry? Check out the online showcase for inspiration.

In any case, don’t worry! We’re here to help you brainstorm and problem-solve. Call your rep. Call your CSA. Oh, and quit touching your face, and wash your hands.
