We are hearing some terrific stories of yearbook staffers and high school journalists who are just hunkering down and making coverage happen. They’re adjusting their plans and doing what works best for them. However, we know there are some of you who are finding yourselves without a compass. Now’s the time to reach out to your rep and your network of yearbook advisers. Take a deep breath. You can do this!

• Interview questions for remote coverage: Follow this link for PDFs you can send staffers as interview assignments. Each has about 20 questions they can use to cover a sport without the sport being in progress. This is one way to fill your spring sports pages without changing course dramatically.

• Assign professional development: There are some amazing opportunities for students to learn real-world skills in writing, graphic design, photography and videography. Adobe is offering free Creative Cloud subscriptions, and the internet is full of tutorials — many of which are free for educators. Make an assignment list for each discipline and allow students to choose. The measurable outcome can be simple — like learning to eliminate the background of a photo or writing a news article that mimics a professional writer’s style — but the real learning opportunity can be unlimited for a student who explores a subject they are passionate about.

• Write a letter to your successor: Channel all of those emotions your students (and you) are navigating. Have each staffer write a letter to a future staffer. Have them explain their job duties and what their position on staff meant to them. Have them write about the importance of yearbook. Save these.
