HOW TO YBK
Time out for business

We know you have production deadlines to meet. And those are super important. But, now that your book’s production is underway at the plant, it’s probably time to take a moment to examine book sales (and ad sales, if they’re still underway) and give them a boost if needed. If you use a tiered pricing model, this may be your last big sales push before raising your prices.

Now, you may be also thinking that book sales are really, really hard this year. And no doubt, that is the case in many areas. Like everything this year, timing and schedules are not what they have been in the past. But a sluggish sales season doesn’t necessarily mean that parents and students won’t be upset if they miss out on ordering a yearbook. In fact, even in the craziness of last spring, we saw many schools sell out for the first time in a while.

How? Well, 2020 was full of distractions for parents (and teachers!). So, make sure you’re getting a focused sales message across to parents and students.

THREE THINGS YOU CAN DO

Here are few ways to focus everyone’s attention and sell more yearbooks.

1. Send and Sell: Here’s an eDesign tool that allows you to send emails to specific groups of parents in just a few steps. Just to make it even easier, check out these sample messages you can copy and paste. If you're new to Send and Sell, make sure to click the help button in eDesign for tutorials and directions.

2. Resources to get the word out: There’s no need to reinvent the wheel. Check out the ready-to-post social media badges and downloadable resources in the Premium Content section of YearbookDiscoveries.com.

3. Get staffers involved: Lead the charge to publicize sales, but mobilize your troops to help out. Motivate staffers by holding a book sales contest. Assign teams to sell to a specific grade level and equip them to make sales. Have them develop videos to promote yearbook to both parents (Facebook) and students (TikTok). Post the best ones. Give them grades. Have a little fun with it.

At the end of the day, selling yearbooks is the primary way to ensure the financial health and longevity of your program. With all of the work you are doing to make a great yearbook, it makes sense to spend time promoting it. Going a little overboard getting the sales message out and making sure everyone knows how to order may be what’s required this year.
