HOW TO YBK
Different coverage for a different year

In a non-traditional year, everyone is having to stretch to cover traditional topics. Last week, we gave you some ideas for academics coverage. Here are some ideas for covering electives or clubs/organizations:

Focus on the output: For art class, have students or teachers send photos of student art. For creative writing, ask students if you can publish their poetry. Career and Technical Education classes can fit in here, as well. Seek out photos and information about favorite dishes from culinary arts, best projects from welding and woodworking, and best haircuts from cosmetology.

spread
Embrace white space: With non-traditional coverage — especially with artwork and great photography — think outside the template and place more space between items on a page. This works especially well for openings, closings and interrupter spreads. Check out the Showcase section of YearbookDiscoveries.com for ideas of how other schools use white space. This is another way student publications can mirror the work of professionals — think of story packages in magazines.

Expand on what you have: Maybe it’s time to take a really good story that your staff already has and expand the space it takes up. We’ve seen jump coverage done so well — there’s a lead-in photo or photo package introducing a topic and then, on the next spread, additional photos, the main body copy and any associated topics or mods complete the whole story.

SALES SPOTLIGHT

Coverage sells books

Letting students know they’re covered on a certain page of the book can be a game changer for book sales. Once they know for sure they’re included, students who weren’t all that interested in having a yearbook might be inspired to remind their parent or guardian to go to YearbookOrderCenter.com.

Step one is to identify who you’ve covered, and step two is to eliminate anyone who has already purchased a book. eDesign users can run coverage reports. Other users can run an index.

Once you’ve got your list, you can use these handy postcards, to let students know they’re covered. Or contact students by email or any other creative method. Just remember to include information about how they can make a purchase.
