HOW TO YBK: LESSON PLAN
Recruitment is for real

If you missed it, we released a whole suite of tools to help you recruit your next crop of eager yearbookers. Check it out. There are things to print and order online, presentations and social media badges.

As students choose their classes for next year, it’s important to promote yearbook and journalism classes in a variety of ways. Here are some ideas:

RECRUITING 101
  1. Consider involving your entire staff by asking them to thoughtfully consider and refer students to yearbook. Remind them to think of peers who work well with others, understand deadlines and even those who might just need a reason to get involved. Have them write a paragraph for each student they’d like to refer and reward their efforts with a grade or extra credit.
  2. Show the skills presentation to your class. Have them record testimonial messages to explain why yearbook is important to them. Make sure they highlight the skills they’ve gained. Share on social media or on school announcements.
  3. Plan an informational meeting for students. Order or print posters and hang them where they will be seen. Add details about where and when.
  4. Consider sending invites to an information session and accepting RSVPs, so you can have snacks or provide lunch.
  5. If you're really struggling to build your program, consider joining an organization, like the Journalism Education Association or your state scholastic journalism organization. Often, other journalism teachers in your state can provide the best, most specific support to help you solve problems and deal with hurdles.

NEW HERE?

In addition to all of this talk of recruitment, let’s not forget that your best assets for next year are often the students you have already been working with.
